My month-long stay in Abuja, Nigeria which lasted from 8th April,2023 to 7th May,2023, was an unforgettable mix of culture, adventure, and relaxation. From the moment I arrived, I was captivated by the city’s unique blend of modernity and tradition. I also spent and unforgettable time with my family and friends that created lasting memories.
Week 1: Settling In and Exploring the Landmarks
I started my journey by visiting some of Abuja’s most iconic spots. Aso Rock, a towering monolith in the heart of the city, was breathtaking, especially during sunrise and sunset. The sense of history and significance surrounding the rock made it more than just a geographical feature; it felt like the heartbeat of the city.
I also took time to visit the National Mosque and the National Christian Centre. Both buildings are architectural marvels, representing the religious harmony in Nigeria. The peaceful atmosphere within these spaces was a great way to begin my exploration of the city.
Week 2: Immersing in Culture and Local Experiences
In my second week, I delved deeper into Nigerian culture. I spent hours wandering around the Arts and Craft Village, where I picked up some beautifully handcrafted souvenirs. The artisans were friendly, always eager to share the stories behind their creations.
One of the highlights of this week was exploring Millennium Park. I enjoyed walking through the beautifully landscaped gardens, taking in the fresh air, and watching families enjoy their time together. The park was an ideal place to unwind, with a picnic under the shade of the trees.
I also had the opportunity to visit my hometown called Bida, in Niger state for Eid al Fitr celebrations. I had the opportunity to meet my extended family members as we all celebrated the festivities together.
Week 3: Nature, Adventure, and Day Trips
This week was all about nature and adventure. I took a day trip to Gurara Waterfalls, a few hours outside Abuja. The drive was scenic, and the waterfall itself was mesmerising. I spent hours listening to the soothing rush of water and enjoying the tranquil surroundings.
Back in Abuja, I visited Usuma Dam and Park for a day of relaxation. The serenity of the dam, coupled with the panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, made it one of the most peaceful spots I visited during my stay.
Week 4: Food, Shopping, and Farewells
In my final week, I focused on experiencing Abuja’s culinary scene and doing some last-minute shopping. I dined at Nkoyo, enjoying delicious traditional dishes like jollof rice and suya, and also indulged in continental meals at BluCabana. Each meal was a delight, and the hospitality in every restaurant was warm and welcoming.
I made a stop at Jabi Lake Mall for some shopping and enjoyed a boat ride on Jabi Lake. The mall offered a mix of local and international stores, and the lake area was bustling with activity – perfect for a final relaxing afternoon.
As my month in Abuja came to an end, I reflected on how much I had learned and experienced. From the welcoming people and rich culture to the natural beauty and modern amenities, Abuja offered the perfect balance. I left with wonderful memories and a deeper appreciation for Nigeria.
Your one-month experience in Abuja would be a story of discovering the city’s hidden gems, savouring local cuisine, and engaging with the vibrant culture that defines Nigeria’s capital.
